Story

Recipes give pasta in grams. People eat it one strand at a time. The Strand- Count Pasta Measure closes the gap: put the pasta on the platform and read the portion as a whole number of strands.

How it counts

A load cell reads to 0.01 g and divides the reading by the average mass of a single strand for the selected shape. Fourteen common shapes are calibrated in the factory, from capellini to bucatini. Spaghetti No. 5 averages 0.83 g per strand. A broken strand is counted as a fraction and shown to one decimal place.

Countdown mode

Enter a target, such as 212 g, and the display counts down instead of up: it shows how many strands remain to be added, updating as pasta is placed on the platform. At zero, the target has been reached to within one strand.

Finish

The measure ships in steel. Passing €15,000 unlocked a second finish, brushed copper, on the Measure and stand Reward. Either finish reads to the same resolution.

Shipping

The first units shipped roughly two months after the Campaign closed its books, once two factory runs cleared calibration on all fourteen shapes without a strand-count outside tolerance.

Updates

  1. Arriving now Update #5 ·

The first units are reaching backers. If yours has not arrived within a week, reply here.

  2. Rewards have shipped Update #4 ·

The first factory run cleared calibration on all fourteen shapes and has shipped. If you backed a Measure and stand, your chosen finish shipped with it.

  3. Countdown labels are unlocked Update #3 ·

Passing €19,000 unlocked printed countdown labels for all fourteen calibrated shapes. Labels ship with every Measure and stand Reward.

  4. Brushed copper is unlocked Update #2 ·

Passing €15,000 unlocked a second finish on the Measure and stand Reward. Both finishes read to the same 0.01 g resolution.

The next stretch goal prints countdown labels for all fourteen calibrated shapes, so the countdown mode does not need the manual to look up a target.

  5. Funded in two days Update #1 ·

The goal was reached. Thank you. The first stretch goal, a second finish in brushed copper, is next.

Comments

  1. Marta O.

Does it work with fresh pasta, or only dried?

    1. Henrik AaltoInventor

Dried only. Fresh pasta strands vary too much in mass to count reliably.

  2. Colm F.

Backed for two. My household disagrees about portion size weekly.

  3. Ingrid S.

What happens with a strand that snapped in the box?

    1. Henrik AaltoInventor

It is counted as a fraction and shown to one decimal place. Two halves read as 1.0.

  4. Devon K.

Countdown mode is the reason I backed this. Cooking for one is mostly subtraction.

  5. Priya L.

Brushed copper is a good look for a scale. Glad it made the stretch goal.

    1. Henrik AaltoInventor

Thank you. The finish reads to the same 0.01 g resolution as steel.

  6. Sanne V.

Does the calibration card cover bucatini specifically? Mine is thicker than the others.

    1. Henrik AaltoInventor

Yes. Bucatini is one of the fourteen shapes, calibrated separately from spaghetti.

  7. Tobias R.

    Any news on shipping dates?

  8. Marta O.

Mine arrived. The strand count for Spaghetti No. 5 matches the spreadsheet exactly.

  9. Colm F.

Both of ours arrived too. My household still disagrees, now with better data.
