Story

A bar of soap moves a great deal over its working life and nobody has ever said by how much. The Soap Bar Odometer answers the question in metres, without changing how the soap is used.

The insert

A six-axis motion sensor is embedded in a silicone insert small enough to press into the back of any bar. The insert flexes with the bar as it is worked in the hands and records motion continuously while it is off the dish. It is food-grade silicone, rated for full immersion, and unaffected by being lathered.

Reading the distance

The dish itself does no sensing. When the bar is set back down, the insert's recorded motion transfers to the dish over Bluetooth Low Energy, and the dish relays it to the app. The app reports metres travelled for that wash, a running total for the current bar, and a lifetime figure written down at the moment a bar is used down to the insert and retired.

The first bar

The Inventor had long wondered how far a bar of soap travels and found no prior measurement of it. The first tracked bar covered 1.9 kilometres over 41 days, an average of 46 metres a day, mostly across the hands rather than the body. The insert survived the full 41 days and has since been reused across several more bars; it is rated for up to 30 before the seal is retired.

Shipping

The dish and one insert ship worldwide. A spare insert ships with a Pledge and is not sold on its own to a new backer, since it needs a dish to read it.

Updates

  1. What happened next Update #4 ·

The insert is still in use, in a further bar, and the count continues. Nothing further has been produced.

  2. The Campaign has ended Update #3 ·

The Soap Bar Odometer closed at 31% of its goal, short of what production needed.

110 Backers wanted to know their own number. Nobody has been charged, and the remaining inserts are set aside for a possible second run.

  3. Insert durability, an update Update #2 ·

The original insert has now been reused across four additional bars without a change in reading accuracy. It remains rated for up to 30 bars before the seal is retired, and nothing so far suggests that figure needs revising.

  4. A note on the first bar's number Update #1 ·

Several Backers have asked whether 1.9 kilometres over 41 days is a typical bar. We have only tracked the one bar so far, so it is both the typical figure and the entire dataset. A wider sample is planned once more inserts are in circulation.

Comments

  1. Noor V.

Does the sensor drain the battery of soap-adjacent devices, or is it independent?

    1. Inês CardosoInventor

The insert has its own coin cell. Nothing else in the bathroom is involved.

  2. Tomasz K.

Backed the two-insert set. My partner and I each want our own number.

  3. Alva R.

What happens to the reading if the bar is cut in half?

    1. Inês CardosoInventor

The insert keeps recording. The total simply becomes two bars' worth of distance credited to one.

  4. Femi O.

Is 46 metres a day a lot? I have nothing to compare it to.

    1. Inês CardosoInventor

Neither did we. It is the only figure that exists, so it is also the average.

  5. Greta S.

Hoping this reaches its goal. I want to know my number.

  6. Dov L.

Sorry to see it end short. I would have liked to know my own number.

    1. Inês CardosoInventor

No one has been charged. The inserts go back in the drawer until there is a second run.
