Story

Sleep is the only activity whose participants cannot confirm it happened. You can be told you were asleep, by someone who was awake to see it, but you cannot check your own account against anything. The Sleep Confirmation Clock checks it for you.

The verdict

An accelerometer under the mattress plate and a microphone in the base monitor the bed through the night. At the alarm, the display reads either Asleep or Not Asleep, with the number of hours behind whichever word it shows. There is no sleep score. A score would be a judgement, and the clock is not in a position to judge a night it did not live through. It only confirms whether one happened.

What counts

The hours shown run from the first sustained stillness the accelerometer records to the moment the alarm sounds. A period of stillness under three minutes does not count as sleep and is not counted; the Inventor has seen enough three-minute stillnesses that turned out to be someone deciding whether to get up.

Two woods

The Ash Clock and the Walnut Edition are the same clock in different timber, both 90 mm tall with an oiled finish that is meant to be touched in the dark without looking. The Walnut Edition is limited to 150 units, the amount of walnut the Inventor's supplier could commit to at this thickness before the campaign ends.

The Inventor

Tomasz Wróbel is the optics technician in Wrocław behind the Automatic Sheep Counter. That clock counts sheep all night and prints a total. Backers keep asking a different question: whether they slept at all. This is his answer to that question, not an upgrade to the old one.

Updates

  1. Walnut supply confirmed Update #2 ·

Our supplier has confirmed enough walnut at the thickness we need for 150 units, which sets the limit on the Walnut Edition. No more will be cut for this campaign.

  2. Why three minutes Update #1 ·

Early prototypes counted any stillness at all, which meant a long pause to check a phone sometimes registered as the start of a night. Three minutes was the shortest threshold that stopped counting those pauses without missing an actual, quick fall into sleep.

Comments

  1. Marta W.

Does it know the difference between asleep and just lying very still?

    1. Tomasz WróbelInventor

Not with certainty. It requires three minutes of stillness before it counts, which most lying-still does not survive.

  2. Lucjan B.

Backed the Walnut Edition. My nightstand needed a clock that doesn't flatter me.

  3. Aiko T.

What happens if I get up in the middle of the night?

    1. Tomasz WróbelInventor

The hours reset to the next sustained stillness. A short night reads as a short night.

  4. Dorothea S.

No backlight at all? I don't want a glow at 3am.

  5. Iwo K.

I was hoping for a percentage, honestly. Asleep or Not Asleep feels a bit blunt.

    1. Tomasz WróbelInventor

A percentage would be a guess dressed as a number. This is not that.

  6. Selma R.

Backed the Ash Clock. Simple is fine for a bedside table.

  7. Kacper D.

Does the microphone pick up a partner snoring and count that against me?

  8. Nadia F.

Just backed the spare plate too. My cats sleep in this bed more nights than I do.
