Story
Counting sheep is supposed to help you sleep. In practice it keeps you awake: you cannot stop counting, and you cannot fall asleep while you do. The Automatic Sheep Counter does the counting instead, so you no longer have to.
How it counts
A small projector casts a line of sheep across the ceiling, one every 1.8 seconds, and a counter beside it increments with each one. You watch, or you don't. Either way the total keeps climbing until morning.
Through the night
After twenty minutes the display dims to 0.5 lux, dark enough to sleep by and bright enough to keep counting by. A typical night reaches around 16,000 sheep. The Inventor's own record, set during testing, is 19,412.
In the morning
The total is shown on waking and kept in a rolling 30-night history, so a restless week is visible against the nights around it rather than judged on its own.
The Inventor
Tomasz Wróbel is an optics technician in Wrocław. He built the first prototype after losing count on the fourth night of trying to fall asleep the old way.

Updates
Twenty hours left
We are short of the goal with under a day remaining. If you have been waiting to back this, now is the time. Thank you to everyone who already has.
The 30-night history
The unit now keeps a rolling 30-night total, so a slow week is visible against the nights around it rather than judged on its own. Existing Backers will receive this as a firmware update at delivery, at no cost.
Why 1.8 seconds
Early prototypes projected one sheep per second, which counted faster than most testers could stop paying attention to it. At 1.8 seconds the count still climbs through the night without holding anyone's attention along the way.

Comments
Does it wake you up when it reaches a round number?
No. It counts through round numbers the same as any other.
My personal best was around 4,000 before I fell asleep from the effort. This seems easier.
Backed the Twin Unit. My partner and I will finally have comparable numbers.
Is the projector bright enough to count as a night light?
It dims to 0.5 lux after twenty minutes, which is not bright enough to read by. It is bright enough to keep counting by.
Does the count reset if I get up in the night?
Backed the Founder's Edition. Twenty of these seems like exactly the right number to make.
19,412 in one night sounds less like insomnia and more like a record attempt.
It was both.
Cutting it close. Just backed to help push this over the line.
Hoping the last few hours bring it home. The spare lens sold me.
