Story

A mirror shows you as you are, looking at it. The Delayed Mirror shows you as you were three seconds ago, which is the one view an ordinary mirror cannot give you: yourself, not looking.

The delay

A camera behind the half-silvered glass front records the room continuously and plays it back after a fixed delay. At the default setting of 3.0 seconds, what you see is not your reflection but a recording of yourself from a moment ago, holding whatever expression you had before you noticed the mirror.

Why three seconds

The delay is adjustable from 1 to 10 seconds in 0.5-second steps. Under one second, the effect is difficult to notice. Past six, most testers had already looked away and back more than once, and the image no longer matched what they remembered doing. Three seconds was long enough to look away and back exactly once.

Seeing yourself now

At a low viewing angle, enough of the glass's own reflection remains visible alongside the delayed image underneath. Users who need to check their reflection in real time, rather than three seconds late, can still do so; they simply have to stand off to the side to find it.

Shipping

The Delayed Mirror ships within the domestic zone and Europe only. The glass front is 8 mm thick and the unit weighs 24 kg fully assembled; we could not find a world-zone courier willing to quote a rate for it.

Updates

  1. A note on the delay setting Update #2 ·

Several backers have written in asking which delay to choose. We still recommend 3.0 seconds for most bathrooms. Anything under a second reads as no delay at all; anything past six seconds tends to surprise people who have already looked away twice.

  2. Live, and past halfway on day one Update #1 ·

The Delayed Mirror launched a day ago and has already passed halfway to its goal. The Founder's edition, limited to 40 units, is more than three-quarters claimed.

Comments

  1. Rui F.

Does the delay reset when I turn the light off and on?

    1. Inês CardosoInventor

No. It keeps recording as long as it has power, light or no light.

  2. Marta S.

Backed the Founder's edition. Numbered plate sold me.

  3. Dorin V.

What happens if I stand still for the whole three seconds?

    1. Inês CardosoInventor

Then the delayed image matches the live one, and you will not notice a difference.

  4. Camille B.

Disappointed it does not ship outside Europe. The glass is the reason, I assume.

    1. Inês CardosoInventor

Correct. Eight millimetres of glass and a heated camera housing add up quickly in a crate.

  5. Yusuf T.

Planning to set mine to 6 seconds once it arrives. My partner will think I am ignoring her, until she remembers the mirror is six seconds behind.

  6. Priya D.

    Is the anti-fog heater loud?

    1. Inês CardosoInventor

No moving parts. It is a resistive element behind the glass, silent at any setting.

  7. Ola N.

Got the spare heater element too, just in case.
