Story

The Passport Presence Monitor clips inside a jacket pocket and checks, every 90 seconds, that the passport is still there. When it is, the monitor vibrates once. When it is not, the monitor does nothing.

The premise

On a four-day trip to Osaka the Inventor touched her jacket pocket 212 times to confirm that her passport was in it. It was in it every time. The conclusion was not that she should check less. It was that the checking could be done by something that does not get tired.

How it checks

A 0.4 mm tag sits inside the passport's back cover. The monitor reads it across 40 mm of fabric, which is one pocket and not the next. Every 90 seconds it takes a reading. If the tag answers, the monitor gives one 120 ms vibration, felt against the ribs and not heard by anyone nearby.

What it does not do

The monitor does not locate a passport. It does not alert, ring or send anything to a phone. When the tag stops answering, the vibrations stop, and the traveller will notice, in time, that nothing is being confirmed. Early testers found this took between four and eleven minutes.

Testing

Twelve prototypes have completed 1,800 hours of travel between them, on trains, ferries and 64 flights. They confirmed the presence of a passport 72,000 times. They were never wrong, and they were never asked to be anything else.

Stretch goals

At €22,000 every Reward gains a second tag, for the boarding pass. The monitor alternates between the two and confirms each every three minutes. At €30,000 each monitor ships in a felt pouch cut to its exact size.

Updates

  1. Funded Update #2 ·

We passed €18,000 last night, on day four. Tooling for the aluminium body is booked, and the first 50 passport tags have been cut and read 11,000 times each without a miss.

The next stretch goal, at €22,000, adds a second tag for the boarding pass. The monitor will confirm each of them every three minutes.

  2. Early-bird monitors sold out Update #1 ·

All 100 Early-bird monitors were claimed within the first day. Thank you. The standard Reward is the same monitor and tag, in the same two finishes, at €49.

Comments

  1. Henrike S.

Will it tell me if I leave my passport at the hotel?

    1. Priya RamanInventor

It will stop confirming that you have it. Most testers noticed within eleven minutes.

  2. Tomás V.

Early-bird gone before I finished my coffee. Backed the regular one in sand.

  3. Wen L.

Does it work through a leather jacket?

    1. Priya RamanInventor

Yes, up to 4 mm of leather. We tested it with a motorcycle jacket, which was the thickest we could borrow.

  4. Rosalind P.

I touch my pocket about as often as the Inventor does. Backing the Family set so the whole household can stop.

  5. Kofi A.

Can I change the interval to 60 seconds?

    1. Priya RamanInventor

No. We tested 60 seconds and testers began waiting for the next one. At 90 seconds they forget it is there until it confirms.

  6. Maren D.

Funded. Hoping for the boarding pass tag next.

  7. Luca B.

Does the vibration go off at security when the passport is in the tray?

    1. Priya RamanInventor

It does not. The passport is not in your pocket, so there is nothing to confirm.
