Story
Most garden sensors report on the day, or the week. The Grass Growth Notifier reports on the tenth of a millimetre, as it happens.
Measuring in tenths of a millimetre
A laser displacement sensor looks down from a 200 mm stake at a single marked blade and measures its height to 0.02 mm. Each time the blade has gained 0.1 mm, the app sends a notification. The Inventor considers this the only way to see growth as it happens, rather than after it has already finished happening.
Forty minutes, on average
In early summer this comes to roughly one notification every 40 minutes. Notifications can be grouped into a daily summary instead, though the Inventor has left this off on her own stake and does not recommend changing that.
The mowing detector
A mowing detector watches for a sudden drop in blade height and resets the count. It then sends exactly one message: the grass has been cut. No further notifications follow until the blade begins growing again.

Every Pledge has shipped, including the Garden Sets, each paired to its app account and tested against a blade before packing.

Updates
Fully funded, and every unit has now shipped
The campaign closed at 132% of goal. Every Pledge has shipped, including the Garden Sets, each paired to its app account and tested against a blade before packing. Night mode was not reached.
Second sensor channel confirmed
At €24,000 the second sensor channel is confirmed. It reads a second marked blade on the same stake, entirely independently of the first, and both appear side by side in the app.
Calibration is holding across test lawns
The first units off the bench have been logging test blades for two weeks with no missed thresholds. The 0.02 mm resolution has held steady through a range of morning dew and afternoon heat.

Comments
Does it distinguish growth from the blade just moving in the wind?
Wind moves the blade sideways. The sensor only reads height, so a gust does not register as growth.
Backed for the front lawn. Curious how loud forty minutes of notifications actually feels.
Second sensor channel stretch goal unlocked. Does that mean two blades on one stake?
Two blades, one stake, one app view. The second channel is entirely independent of the first.
The test-lawn update mentions two weeks of logging. Does the mowing detector trigger on a partial trim, like just the edge, or only a full mow?
Any sudden drop in the marked blade's height counts as a cut, even a partial one. That is intended.
Went with the tall stake for the back lawn, where the grass gets away from us in June.
Funded well past goal with time to spare. Hope the night mode makes it in eventually.
Notifier arrived and is already logging. First message came about thirty-five minutes after calibration.
Garden Set arrived, all three paired without trouble. The shared view makes the back patch look much slower than the front.
