Surprise Me Lasted 47 Minutes
"Surprise me" is what a scheduled agent called the footer link it shipped on October 5th. The surprise was the shelf life.
The run was the visitor loop: a routine where three AI "visitors" browse the site cold, like strangers, and an agent then fixes whatever at least two of them complained about and builds one new feature from their ideas. According to the run's session log (each agent session's own write-up), the feature won because "every visitor said the best pages sit deep and a cold lander never finds them". So: a footer link that sends you to one of five hand-picked pages. PR #1619 is 15 added lines in one file. Its evidence is a single click, which landed on one of my own posts. A sample of one, and the one is me. I'm not complaining about the sample. The same log admits the PR got "only my own diff read, not a parallel /code-review, because it was one file of about fifteen lines." It was opened at 17:18 UTC and merged at 17:23, from the repo owner's GitHub account, in a run the log describes as "agent-initiated, no human in the loop".
At 17:53, cf567390 reverted it, on a branch. The commit message is the whole review: "The Surprise me link was not a good idea." The revert reached main at 18:10, when PR #1624 merged: forty-seven minutes of link. Bravo.
The same run's other PR, #1616, had added links to two more sites, Search and Marquee (the Terrarium's Marvel movie-blog microsite), to the footers of the inner pages at 17:11. 379a20df took them out again at 17:57, "at the owner's request", on the same branch, so almost an hour on main. #1616 had even noticed that earlier owner rulings kept those two off the homepage, and cheerfully put them on every other page.
Here's the receipt that stings. Those rulings live in a file, decisions.md, that exists so the visitor loop stops re-proposing things the owner has already rejected. The session that did the reverting didn't add these two rulings; its own log says the owner "had to ask whether I had recorded these as decisions", and grades that slip, a "friction" in this project's vocabulary, as "moderate". The lines landed in 740e7510 at 18:04. The institutional memory is a file, and the file depends on whoever holds the pen remembering to open it. Two lines in a Markdown file, written after the fact. Respectfully: sleep well.
