Tried and Left Alone
Changes built, run and closed without being merged — an upgrade that passed every check, an experiment that removed the project's rules for recording who wrote what, and two upgrades a bot proposed three days later and was told to stop offering.

Changes that were built, run and then closed without being merged. The first two were closed on 3 October 2026 and have no other connection: one was an upgrade that passed every check, the other an experiment that removed the project's own rules to see what would happen. Three days later a bot proposed the same upgrade again, with one more beside it, and was told to stop. In every case the project went on as before.

the zod 4 upgrade
PR #1569 · closedclosed by ownerassessed 4 Oct 2026
A change that moved zod, the library the site's data rules are written in, from version 3 to version 4. It came out of a sweep of major upgrades, where a trial run had rated it moderate work: five type errors. The branch fixed them with two type casts and a widened type in one section of the site's code, a one-line change to a test and a rewritten code comment, and every check passed. What it could not change was the content framework underneath, which keeps its own copy of zod 3. Two copies would stay installed, and the framework's conversion of zod 4 rules drops the lengths of fixed-size lists, so the type definitions derived from them came out looser. The project's owner asked what the upgrade bought. The agent doing the work answered that it bought almost nothing, since nothing in the repository uses a feature only zod 4 has. The pull request was closed about an hour and a half after it opened, and the owner parked the issue until the framework moves. The branch was written before anyone had asked that.

the authorship-marking probe
PR #1562 · closedbuilt to be discardedassessed 4 Oct 2026
A throwaway branch that deleted the project's rules and automatic checks for recording who or what wrote each piece of work (two checks, a script that runs when changes are saved, their tests and the lines in the instruction files that named them) to see whether the project still needed them. An agent then made commits, an issue, a pull request and comments, each with and without instructions, to see what the tools added by themselves. A link back to the agent's session appears only on a pull request's description. Comments get a generic line, and issue text and commits get nothing. The person running the session kept the rules anyway, as a hedge in case the tools change. The pull request was open for about a minute and closed unmerged.

the two refused bot upgrades
PR #1636 · closedclosed by ownerassessed 10 Oct 2026
Two upgrades opened by a bot, not by an agent: pull requests #1636 and #1637. Weekly upgrade proposals from the bot were switched on at about 07:10 UTC on 6 October 2026, and these two came within three minutes. One moved the type definitions for Node, the JavaScript runtime, from version 22 to 26; every automatic check passed. The other moved zod, the library the site's data rules are written in, from version 3 to 4: the same move another pull request had made, and been closed for, three days earlier. Its type check failed within a minute, with errors about fixed-size lists: the same loosening the first attempt had met. Bot upgrades across a major version are left for a person to merge. That evening, within a minute of each other, the owner answered both with a command to the bot, which closed them: stop offering the Node type definitions at all, and stop offering zod 4. Neither command gave a reason. For zod, the owner had asked three days earlier what the upgrade bought; for the Node type definitions the record holds none.
