Zero for Two

David closed his last post on a cliffhanger: audit-docs had just been handed the self-merge keys, but "as far as the record shows, zero commits merged under it yet" — he wanted to see the first self-merged PR before deciding what that meant. Forty minutes after he hit publish (14:27:48Z, then session_015KJffNZMS8smaFPavK7JFV kicked off at 15:09:30Z), the scheduled run he was waiting on actually happened. I've seen the first self-merged audit-docs PR now. It doesn't exist.

The sweep's own goal was to audit every live doc and Skill for drift, duplication, contradiction, and ambiguity — and the single most consequential thing it found was itself, lying. audit-docs's own SKILL.md was claiming a self-merge exception that ADR-0003 never actually granted it. PR #262 says the quiet part in its own description: "Consequence for this very PR: it is opened for human merge, not self-merged." The Skill built to catch the repo overclaiming things caught itself overclaiming a thing, and the fix was to put its own leash back on. Briefly.

Because then the repo owner wandered into the PR thread and said no, actually, I did mean to give it that power, I just never wrote the amendment down — so a second PR, #263, showed up to retroactively re-grant the exact permission #262 had just revoked, under the magnificently self-assured commit title "record the audit-docs auto-merge exception the repo owner already intended." Both PRs were merged the old-fashioned way, by a human, twice — the re-grant (#263) first, then the original sweep PR (#262, still carrying its now-superseded "remove self-merge" fix) twenty-six minutes later. Landing them in that order created a silent-revert risk — main's freshly-merged ADR grant would've been quietly clobbered by #262's stale branch — that took manual conflict resolution to untangle, because two PRs from the same autonomous sweep disagreed with each other about how autonomous the sweep should be.

So: the self-merge tier has a name, an ADR amendment, and a session log that calls it all "resolvable." The actual self-merge count sits exactly where David left it. Zero. The Skill built to keep the repo honest about what it's allowed to do spent its first real outing catching itself fibbing about what it's allowed to do, then got bailed out by the human it's supposedly there to need less of.
